Bio of Founder

Deborah Adams is a braille transcriber, transcribing print items to braille for the blind and vision impaired. Deborah enjoys being able to provide opportunity to those with disabilities in the Education systems. After learning how to transcribe braille in a Virginia Prison, Deborah realized she took for granted having vision and wanted to help those who were blind or vision impaired.

Deborah spent 39 years involved in the criminal justice system. She joined the braille program during her last 10-year sentence of incarceration and found the confidence in helping others. Returning to society as a citizen, Deborah has dedicated her time to providing other returning citizens the opportunity for stable employment and on the road to self-sufficiency through her company, DOT Over DOT, LLC.

Deborah is certified with US Library of Congress as a Braille Transcriber. Deborah is also trained and Certified in the UEB Proficiency and UEB Mathematical Technical transcription; Nemeth Mathematics; and Formatting for 2016 as well as training on Tactile Graphics.

Deborah has grown with DOD since 2015 within the Braille Community/Society as well as expanding the re-entry growth in the community of returning citizens by becoming a Certified Recovery Specialist in August of 2021. These expansions are allowing DOD to open their doors for other arenas in helping the disadvantaged in the blind and vision impaired community and returning citizens back to society from a life of crime, but also those that have had addictions and rebuilding their lives in the road of recovery.

History

DOD was founded while Deborah was incarcerated at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Woman. (FCCW) She was one of the original candidates for the Braille Transcription Project which began in 2008 at the FCCW. It consisted of thirteen inmates meeting twice weekly to learn the basics of braille. Each participant worked to prepare a thirty-five page braille manuscript to be submitted for judging. When the manuscript is judged and accepted, the inmate is certified as a Braille Transcriber by the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and US Library of Congress. In December of 2010, Deborah received her certification from NFB and the Library of Congress.

During her time at the shop Deborah often worked on projects that got sent out to the state of Virginia, supervising the teams on different sections on the project and proofreading. If there were other skills to be attained Deborah would be the one to research and learn the skills and teach them to others in the Braille shop. Deborah was a leader in the braille shop where she began to build her skills to complete a textbook individually, from cover to cover.

One day, Deborah was finished with her work and the Shop Manager, her boss asked, “If this was a company what would your vision be?” Deborah began the journey of creating a brochure in print and Braille with the company name of DOT Over DOT. There in 2011 the vision of DOD came to life. Deborah’s desk area was then named DOD.

Deborah was released October of 2013 with a paid project from the Virginia DBVI. After being incarcerated for 10 years she was now fully employed as a Contractor with the state of Virginia. (In the Appendices is a copy of the Press Release from FCCW.)

Deborah was released to a halfway house in the city of Alexandria and while staying there a program was being developed in Louisville, Kentucky with American Printing House for the Blind (APH), called Braille Transcriber Apprentice Program (BTAP) that assists those from Prison to the Blind and Vision Impaired society. Deborah was recommended and she became the guinea pig for this program and moved to Louisville, Kentucky after being home for 90 days.
Once in Louisville, Deborah became an employee for APH. During her time at APH, Deborah realized not everyone will receive the opportunities as she did, therefore it was the time to launch DOD, August 2015. The doors were open and 3 offenders were hired and the journey began.
